Effect of Penicillin on Sea I/rchin Eggs
نویسنده
چکیده
I t has been shown (1, 2) that the general cell inhibitors urethane, chloral hydrate, and sulfanilamide inhibit cell division of fertilized Arbacia eggs, and that this inhibition results from an inhibition of the specific fraction of the cell respiration upon which cell division depends. I t was considered to be of interest to study the effects of the chemotherapeutic agent, penicillin, on these cells.

The Effect of Penicillin on Eggs of the Sea Urchin, Arbacia Punctulata
1. Penicillin in the range of concentration from 250 U/ml. to approximately 2650 U/ml. inhibits the rate of cell division of the fertilized sea urchin egg from 0 to 100 per cent. 2. Penicillin in the same range of concentrations has no effect on the oxygen consumption of the unfertilized or the fertilized eggs. 3. Penicillin is bound by some component of the sea urchin egg in amounts sufficient...
متن کاملAn investigation on age, growth and biological characteristics of red mullet (Mullus barbatus ponticus, Essipov, 1927) in the Eastern Black Sea
This study was carried out during May 2010 – April 2011 in order to determine various biological properties of red mullet occurring in the Eastern Black Sea region. The average length and weight of 1435 specimens were determined as 13.13 cm and 23.14 g, respectively. Weight-length relationship was determined as W = 0.0088 L3.0338. The age distribution of this population ranged between I and VII...
متن کاملChange in radiosensitivity on the development of sea urchin eggs during the early cleavage stage. II. Protection against x-ray irradiation by cysteamine.
中村 泉:東 京大学理学部動物学教室,東 京都文京区本郷7-3-1,〒113 * Present address : Department of Hygiene, Teikyo University School of Medicine, Tokyo 173 The effect of cysteamine on the fluctuation of X-ray sensitivity during early cleavage stage of sea urchin eggs expressed by pluteus formation rate was examined. Sea urchin eggs were very resistant to radiation immediately after insemination or after S phase of the c...
متن کاملEffects of caffeine and other methylxanthines on the development and metabolism of sea urchin eggs. Involvement of NADP and glutathione
Methylxanthines (MX) inhibit cell division in sea urchin and clam eggs. This inhibitory effect is not mediated via cAMP. MX also inhibit respiration in marine eggs, at concentrations which inhibit cleavage. Studies showed that no changes occurred in ATP and ADP levels in the presence of inhibitory concentrations of MX, indicating an extra-mitochondrial site of action for the drug. Subsequent st...
متن کاملEffects of water temperature and migration time on some fecundity indices and fertilization rate of female Kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum, migratory to Shiroud River in the southwest Caspian Sea
Kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum, is an commercially important fish in the Caspian Sea. The fish enters the rivers leading to the Caspian Sea for spawning. One of these rivers is Shiroud River. In the artificial propagation process of Kutum, different factors are involved in quality and quantity of female broods eggs and also in the best temperature and migration time for spawning. The influence of ...
